Cold Creek HMA

On Saturday April 30, 2005 Commissioner Brehm took two visitors from Florida up Cold Creek to see wild horses.

This came about after a couple of months of email conversations between Commissioner Brehm and Marcy Cohen, who was planning a trip to Las Vegas and had heard that there were wild horses near Las Vegas. While there are several HMA's in the Las Vegas vicinity, Cold Creek offers the best option for people who want to see wild horses in their natural environment.

We had a great visit. While in the Las Vegas area most of the spring bloom was over, Cold Creek is at a higher elevation and the bloom was just beginning. The air had a decided nip and we were glad we had worn long sleeves and brought light jackets. The first wild horse seen was a young bachelor hanging around an equestrian camp site- perhaps trying to get some hay.

We drove a short distance further, parked the vehicles, and took a short hike over to one of the ponds. This allowed Marcy and her husband a chance to see the range, view the water sources and offered Commissioner Brehm the opportunity to answer questions and educate the visitors about the various issues facing both the Cold Creek herd as well as wild horses overall.

We walked back to the vehicles and drove on a bit further where we were rewarded by a large band just slightly in from the road. It was a very colorful band with several pintos, including a Medicine Hat, as well as several babies. We probably spent almost an hour there observing the horses, while Commissioner Brehm explained the various behaviors being exhibited.

Hopefully Marcy and her husband will remember this trip next time they read about wild horses in their local paper, or attend an adoption event. I think Marcy left with the 'mustang bug' and will soon be looking at adopting a living legend for herself.
