Southern Nevada Cultural History Fair

On Saturday May 7, 2005, the Springs Preserve in Las Vegas hosted the Southern Nevada Cultural History Fair at the Gardens at the Springs Preserve. This year the event was also celebrating Las Vegas's Centennial, so the focus was on contributions to the development of Las Vegas.

Horses, including wild horses, were still the main form of transportation back in 1905, as well as area ranchers running stock on their lands. So, Commissioner Brehm was able to secure a spot to bring two mustangs to the event for the public to view and learn about wild horses. The two horses brought were Commissioner Brehm's sorrel gelding from the Nellis Range, Sam, and his best friend, a palomino pinto mare from Black Rock, Pal.

We had a beautiful day and over 2500 people visited the Gardens. People were amazed that Sam and Pal were once wild horses. Sam and Pal certainly enjoyed the carrots and pats from the many visitors.

Many heartfelt thanks to the Tattam family for giving up a Saturday to come 'horse-sit" and help educate the visitors while work duties kept Commissioner Brehm tied up elsewhere. Also thanks to the Bureau of Land Management's Maxine Shane and Jerri Bertola for their support and materials to pass out to the visitors. Many thanks as well to Intermountain Farmers Association (IFA) and manager Robert for donating, and setting up, corral panels for us to use.
